Tummy Time can be Fun & Beneficial

Tummy time is your key to nailing the early development stage of raising your child. It helps your little one to build strength in their neck, shoulders, and their core muscles. For babies with Down syndrome especially, tummy time is how you are not only going to encourage movement but also support your baby’s muscle tone. While some little ones love it right away, others need a bit more encouragement. The good news? With the right approach, tummy time can be both fun and beneficial! 

Here are some top tips to help you master tummy time and make it a fun experience for you and your little one:

1. Start Early and Make It Comfortable

From day one, tummy time can be part of your baby’s daily routine. Start with short sessions, just a minute or two at a time, and gradually increase as your little one gets stronger. The most important thing for you to remember is that your baby should be comfortable at all times! If lying flat on the floor is challenging, try placing baby on your chest or lap to ease them into a gentler start. A soft surface, like a play mat or a rolled-up towel under their chest can also help provide that extra support. Comfort really is key here!

2. Engage and Entertain 

Your little one will be more motivated to lift their head and engage if tummy time is fun! Get down to their level, make eye contact, and talk or sing to them. Another way to make it a little more fun is incorporating their favourite toys, mirrors, or even colourful objects placed just within reach. Making time more fun will help your little one with reaching and pushing up, building strength and also coordination. As long as they’re having fun, tummy time should be a breeze! 

3. Adjust to Their Needs 

YOUR BABY’S NEEDS COME FIRST. Babies with Down syndrome often have lower muscle tone, which can make tummy time more tiring than for the average child. If your baby gets frustrated, no need to worry, just take breaks and try again later. Using a small pillow or a rolled-up blanket under their chest can make it easier at first. Over time, as their strength improves, they’ll rely less and less on that support. 

4. Incorporate It Into Daily Life 

Tummy time doesn’t always have to be on the floor, get creative! Holding your baby on your chest while you relax and lay back or carrying them in a tummy-down position (like the "airplane" hold) are great alternatives to simply putting them on the floor. You can also position them on a safe surface while changing their diaper or after bath time to sneak in extra minutes throughout the day. The secret? Tummy time should be like second nature to you in the early days of being a parent. 

5. Celebrate Small Wins 

Progress may be slow, but every little bit counts! Celebrate even the smallest achievements, whether it’s lifting their head a little higher or holding the position a few seconds longer. Encouragement and consistency will help your baby develop the strength and confidence they need. Tummy time is a wonderful opportunity for bonding with your little one while supporting their growth. With patience and creativity, it can become a fun part of your daily routine—one that lays the foundation for important motor skills in the months to come.
